FAQs: Is it normal for an Alfa to grind gears?

No, it is not normal, but it’s an all too common problem. Shifting too rapidly, especially with a cold transmission, quickly leads to worn synchronizers. This is particularly true of 2nd gear. However, our rule of thumb is to check the easiest thing first. Is there sufficient fluid in the transmission? Then ask the following questions. Is the clutch fully disengaging? Are there leaks? Will bleeding the clutch at the slave cylinder help? Is the clutch itself worn out? If it is not disengaging fully, the transmission will grind. Has it been slipping in heavy use? Does the clutch only disengage at the top of the clutch pedal travel? Has your 16-year-old kid just learned to drive with your car? Of course, sometimes the transmission is worn and a rebuild will be necessary. We supply the original equipment synchronizers to do the job right. And, Redline Synthetic transmission fluid will preserve your investment.
