FAQs: What is “normal” oil consumption for an Alfa? When do I need to rebuild my engine?

Alfas tend to use oil at a slightly faster rate than most cars. For V/6 engines in good condition, anything more than one quart per 1500 miles is excessive consumption. For older Giulietta, Giulia, and 1750/2000 engines, one quart per 1000 miles is acceptable. On any Alfa, once you’re getting below around 700 miles to a quart, it’s time to take some corrective action. Before you rush to rebuild, determine how the oil is leaving your engine. Beside worn rings or valve guides, oil can leave through leaking seals or head gasket, both much easier problems to repair than an engine overhaul. But if you’re fouling spark plugs and noticing blue smoke out the tailpipe, it is time for an engine rebuild.
